How Does Behavior Analysis Occur?

1. Behavior Analysis documents the frequency and intensity of behaviors. A conclusion can then be drawn whether these behaviors should indeed be changed.

2. Triggers (antecedents) and the responses of the environment (consequences) are identified for each behavior.

3. The analysis of the antecedents and consequences determines the behavior’s function. In other words, what does the behavior accomplish for the person who engages in it?

4. Replacement behaviors are identified. A replacement behavior must preserve the function but accomplish it in a more acceptable way. Teaching methods to help a participant learn a replacement behavior are determined.

5. Ways of preventing the behavior and triggering alternate behaviors are provided.

6. Reinforcement procedures to help sustain replacement behaviors are detailed.

7. Punishment and aversives are not used. Behavior Analysis plans must be empirically accountable and must use procedures determined scientifically effective in helping someone change behavior.

Courses

Through its educational affiliate, Behavioral University, BCRC offers specific courses in Behavior Analysis and Special Education. These may range from a single session to year long instruction. Courses can be custom designed for any particular situation and offered at the school site or our own sites. CEUs are available. BCRC also provides guidance for organizations in establishing their own Behavior Analysis and Management systems

Professionals

Instruction in assessment and behavior intervention plan development is given in the context of state and federal statute and regulation.

Paraprofessionals

Training is provided in behavior management and implementation. Also included are preservice, inservice and in-vivo training.

Training and Support of Behavioral Assistants

BCRC endeavors to find Behavioral Assistants (BAs) who have education experience and training with children with special needs, and in particular, with the type of challenge related to a specific student.

Ongoing support and training are usually provided by BCRC Behavior Specialists or Clinical Supervisors who are Credentialed Teachers, Certified Applied Behavior Analysts, or Licensed Mental Health Professionals.

Training consists of regular meetings -- typically on-site, where supervisors can observe the staff member's performance. In addition, BCRC conducts classes in applied behavior analysis and the issues involved in fully including a child.

BCRC publishes much of its own training material. PTR - Prevent, Teach and Reinforce is a comprehensive behavioral training manual that clearly but humorously details BCRC's approach to changing behaviors. Equally respected are BCRC's Paraeducator’s Guide to Inclusive Education and Asperger's Syndrome: A Guide for Teachers and Parents. All staff are assigned to read both manuals if they are in an inclusive setting.
